Office of U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty: Hagerty Happenings, Friday, August 2, 2024

I wanted to let you know about some of the things I've been working on these last few weeks on your behalf.

Since my first day in office, I have always supported Tennessee manufacturers and their ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights. Recently, I was pleased to lead my colleagues in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) Resolution of Disapproval to block the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) interim final rule that severely restricts the ability of American firearm, ammunition, and related-component manufacturers to acquire a license to export their products for sale. In effect, the Biden Administration's rule is an attempt to permanently extend the current "pause" on such export licenses and will rescind approximately 2,000 active export licenses for certain firearms. In addition to being an unlawful, unjustified exercise of regulatory authority, this rule will have a substantial, negative impact on these American manufacturers, their suppliers, and the jobs they support. This politically motivated effort unlawfully dodges the legislative process and destroys American exports, jobs, and small businesses that support the firearm and ammunition industry.

The American people deserve transparency and accountability regarding the Biden Administration's handling of immigration and border security. That is why I was pleased to join Senator Kevin Cramer and 19 other Senate Republicans in sending a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland questioning the Administration's dismissal of asylum cases and highlighting the destructive effect of these policies on the U.S. legal immigration system. The Biden Administration has consistently downplayed the severity of the crisis they have created at our Southern Border, and I will continue to fight in the Senate to ensure that it is addressed properly.

The United States has experienced over 10 million border encounters since President Biden took office - a record high. Many of these border crossers have been released into or evaded apprehension while entering our nation. As a result, several recent reports have shown, upon examination by state officials, instances of non-citizens registering to vote in elections or being prompted to do so. That is why I, along with Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ-05), led our colleagues in the House and Senate in demanding answers from the Department of Justice on their plans to prevent illegal aliens from registering to vote in our federal elections. I am pleased to know that state officials across the country have recently taken steps to prevent, deter, and investigate cases of illegal voter registration by non-citizens, including in South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, and our home state of Tennessee.
