Spanberger Reportedly Cancels Previously Agreed Upon Debate to Avoid Questions About Anti-Parent Position

October 16th, 2022

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY – Today, Yesli Vega, Republican nominee for Virginia's 7th Congressional District issued the following statement after Abigail Spanberger reportedly backed out of the previously agreed upon debate scheduled for October 21st and hosted by the Prince William Committee of 100 & Virginia League of Women Voters.

On Friday, less than 24 hours after news broke that a top Spanberger surrogate proposed legislation that would jail parents for not conforming to liberal woke culture, Abigail Spanberger issued a press release filled with false objections to a debate her campaign had already agreed to. Through the weekend, the Vega campaign worked in earnest with the debate organizers to accommodate Abigail's unreasonable requests in order to make the debate work. The Vega campaign agreed to a debate with one moderator – a former CNN anchor and Spanberger ally – but the Spanberger campaign is afraid of questions surrounding the radical belief that parents are criminals for caring about their children. The Spanberger campaign reportedly informed organizers this afternoon that she would not participate in the debate.

Yesli Vega issued the following statement in response to Spanberger reportedly backing out of the debate:

"The reports of Abigail dropping out of this week's debate are disappointing. Our campaign has been nothing but accommodating, literally agreeing to every Spanberger request without objection. Abigail is scared to answer why she supports this extreme anti-parent agenda. Abigail Spanberger owes Virginia parents an answer. Does she support throwing parents in jail for not conforming to woke culture? And when will Abigail rescind her top surrogate's endorsement for her campaign? She campaigned with her three days before the surrogate proposed radical legislation. Instead of standing up for Virginia parents, Abigail has apparently decided to run and hide until Election Day. Virginians deserve better." - Yesli Vega, Republican Nominee for Virginia's 7th Congressional District
