Office of U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty: Hagerty Happenings, Friday, June 14, 2024

I wanted to let you know about some of the things I've been working on recently on your behalf.

Last week, I pressed FBI Director Christopher Wray on the obvious political weaponization of the justice system to prosecute President Donald Trump. Apparently, in the eyes of Director Wray, it is a complete coincidence that President Trump, Biden's chief political rival, is being prosecuted in five different jurisdictions, all by Democrat prosecutors, in the middle of the election. The political prosecution of President Trump was a sham from start to finish, and his conviction was a dark day for American democracy. Regardless of party affiliation, the American people see through Democrats' weaponization of the justice system.

Another unprecedented act by Democrats was the recent dismissal of the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In our nation's 248-year history, the House of Representatives has impeached officials in 21 cases. Reflecting the grave, highly-rare exercise of this constitutional power, the Senate has tried each such case, except where the person resigned office before the Senate trial, and therefore mooted the issue. We have seen the devastating effects of the Biden Administration's illegal open border policies. The collapse of our southern border—and the devastating consequences and future risks it has created for our nation—is the greatest national security crisis we face. The House of Representatives impeached Secretary Mayorkas for his role in creating this crisis, yet Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) circumvented a Senate trial, hid the evidence from the American people, and has avoided discussing this Administration's failures at all costs. Why? Because this is an election year.

Last month, I sought to pass my Equal Representation Act, legislation to ensure that only citizens are factored into the count for allocating Congressional seats and Electoral College votes that determine presidential elections. My legislation has passed the U.S. House of Representatives, yet Senate Democrats once again blocked it, proving that they support counting illegal aliens in U.S. elections and will do anything to keep their power. During debate about my bill, one Democrat Senator said the quiet part out loud and admitted, this bill "would clearly be a disadvantage for Democrats."
