FREDERICKSBURG, VA – September 9, 2022 – Today, Senator Bryce Reeves (R-Spotsylvania) joined Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-Virginia) and Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs Craig Crenshaw to sign his historic bill, SB528, into law. SB528, which will offer individual income tax exemptions to service members and surviving spouses age 55 and older that receive military retirement benefits, is the first of its kind to be codified into law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Bryce Reeves stated, "During my time as a Senator, I have consistently worked to make Virginia the most veteran-friendly state in the country. Today marks a big step toward achieving that goal to attract and retain the best of the best talent that our country produces. When it comes to those who wear the cloth of our country and risk their lives for our freedom, you will find the Virginia legislature standing shoulder to shoulder with all of us stepping up to do our very best. I'd like to thank the 27 plus veteran service organizations and the Joint Leadership Council (JLC) who helped to get this bill passed. I'd also be remiss if I didn't personally thank my teammates from the General Assembly Military and Veterans Caucus (GAMVC), who made this a priority alongside members of both chambers serving on Senate Finance and House Appropriations. Washington should look to our Commonwealth to see how to get good, bipartisan legislation passed."
Senator Reeves has received an outpouring of support from veterans communities throughout Virginia, and today's event saw high attendance from Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Veterans Vote (AVV), American Legion, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), and Women Marines Association (WMA) members and leadership.
The Senator's past work on veterans issues includes the inception of Veterans Treatment Dockets, designed to offer service members a second chance when interacting with the courts systems and connecting them to the mental health, employment, and housing opportunities they might need. His work extends to the national level as Co-Chair of the National Conference of State Legislators Task Force on Military and Veterans Affairs, where members of state legislative bodies around the country collaborate in order to effectively deal with veterans issues at home.
