Derrick Max, Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy: Your July 28, 2024 Sunday Summary: Trump v Biden now Harris, Cheatle Resigns, TJI Win v NLRB, Energy Crisis, Miyares, Cell Phones, Broken Windmill, Black Jobs and more...

1.) President Biden's decision to drop out of the race should be no surprise to faithful Sunday Summary readers as I wrote on November 5th and again on November 12th that Biden would not be the Democrat's nominee. My reasoning was provided on August 20th when I reported that both parties were on a path to nominate candidates with historically low approval ratings. As Trump started to gain momentum and Biden continued losing ground, Democrats hit the "eject" button on their candidate, while Republicans moved forward with theirs. November will be the ultimate judge of the two paths…

2.) Oddly, Democrats chose the one candidate in V.P. Kamala Harris who has approval ratings just as low (if not lower) than former President Trump.

3.) I continue to believe President Biden is unfit to continue in office. On the night of his oval office speech, The U.S. literally intercepted a joint Russia/China bomber incursion into Alaska's Air Defense Identification Zone -- a first such joint operation. This is no time to play games, Biden should resign.

4.) Also unfit for office, Secret Service Director Cheatle finally resigned after a painful bipartisan grilling by the Government Oversight Committee.

5.) The Thomas Jefferson Institute last year joined an effort to reverse the expansion of the Joint Employer Rule by the National Labor Relations Board -- a change that would have significantly increased the liability risks and costs to employers, increased efforts to unionize, and altered use of labor subcontractors. Our challenge to this change in court led to its complete reversal, which was just upheld on appeal last week -- a big win for a growing economy, employees, and the Thomas Jefferson Institute.

6.) The Virginia Manufacturers Association held a major Energy Summit where business leaders, energy experts, regulators, Senator Warner and Governor Youngkin all gave the same warning: increasing demand for energy in the Commonwealth (due mostly to data centers and AI) would soon outpace supply (due mostly to the shuttering of gas and coal plants and the refusal to build any carbon based energy plants). Our Steve Haner covered the Summit and echoed the speakers' warning about the dangerous impact of the Virginia Clean Economy Act and the urgent need to build reliable dispatchable energy to supplement the less reliable planned solar and wind projects.

7.) If you think reducing energy demand is the answer, the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce held a conference on the benefits of data centers -- including lower real estate taxes, a diversified economy, jobs, and energy efficiency. Data centers account for 40 percent of Loudoun County's budget.

8.) Understanding the need for reliable energy, AG Jason Miyares has joined 24 other states in filing an emergency motion before the Supreme Court to block the EPA's new power plant regulations which will be overly burdensome on existing coal, natural gas and oil-fired plants. We are literally killing our energy companies on the false gospel of green extremists. Miyares, again showing great leadership in fighting back to defend Virginia…

9.) Governor Youngkin's Executive Order 33 to restrict cell phones in schools is too important to be politicized, as discussed by Thomas Jefferson Institute's Chris Braunlich. Chris lays out the educational and mental health impact of cell phones and the need for action. This chart should be a wake up call to all parents -- monitor and restrict your children's screen time, their mental health depends on it!

10.) The first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, a planned farm of 62 total turbines off the shores of Nantucket, lost a 300-foot piece of a broken wind turbine blade. Each blade weighs more than 70 tons and is longer than a football field! Nantucket had to close several beaches for clean up of broken-off foam and fiberglass -- which led to a heated meeting of the Select Board as seen in the following video.

This should be a warning to Dominion's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project...putting massive windmills in salty ocean water, subject to high winds, when the turbines are only rated to survive a level 3 hurricane…seems like an accident in the making. This blade broke during construction and testing and light wind. Our Steve Haner has warned about the cost of these turbines and risks of wind damage -- both of which are to be paid by ratepayers.

11.) William and Mary received a $100 million donation to study the impact of climate change on coastal communities -- specifically, rising temperatures, rising seas and more intense storms. They could save a lot of money by just reading Steve Haner's article pointing out that temperatures and seas are rising fairly slowly and there is no crisis. They could also read my article showing that hurricane intensity and numbers are not increasing.  Maybe break off some of that grant for the Thomas Jefferson Institute...

12.) Governor Youngkin appointed the daughter of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Meg Bryce, to the Virginia Board of Education. Bryce has a doctorate in cognitive science from UVA, teaches psychology part-time in the UVA Interdisciplinary Studies Program, and mentors students in their capstone projects. Despite running unsuccessfully for an at-large seat on the Albemarle County school board where her candidacy was a long-shot, Bryce is a great choice for the Virginia Board of Education.

13.) The Virginia Board of Education adopted new standards of accreditation after Governor Youngkin rejected the existing standards which lacked transparency and inflated school/student performance.

14.) The student convicted of sexually assaulting two girls in the Loudoun County Public Schools in 2021 has been released and is off probation…shocking.

15.) I recently wrote that the phrase "black jobs" is harmful to African Americans as it tells young people that their career path is limited and it discounts the amazing progress Blacks have made since emancipation. With V.P. Harris in the race, the following meme made my point that all jobs are black jobs, even the Presidency! This meme made me laugh…enjoy.

Jason Miyares: My latest endorsement 👀

Today, I am honored to endorse Derrick Anderson in the 7th Congressional District.

Derrick is a member of the National Guard and a Special Forces Green Beret with deep roots in the 7th District.

He served our country in six deployments around the world, including during "the Surge" in Iraq. He served in the White House in the Office of National Drug Control Policy during President Trump's Administration. I know he'll serve the people of the 7th District admirably as their congressman.

I look forward to working alongside Derrick to take back the 7th this year! Will you join me in supporting Derrick's campaign today?

FX Hedge Newsletter: NATIONAL DEBT IN A NUTSHELL

As rates ramped up to cool the inflation caused by both the artificially low rates and excessive government spending, the interest expense on the debt began rising, and fast. Once again, the bureaucrats tried to hide the cost.

Yellen began radically changing the maturity schedule of the federal debt, running the Treasury almost like a hedge fund, in anticipation of Powell & Co. cutting rates several times this year.

Instead of the usual mix of short-, mid- and long-term Treasuries, Yellen reduced offerings of new bonds and notes and didn't replace some of the old ones at maturity. Instead, she flooded the market with T-bills.

Like all debt markets, Treasuries have the rules for Supply and Demand reversed. In other words, increasing supply of issuance doesn't decrease price (interest rate) but increases it. That's because increasing the supply of debt is really increasing the demand for loanable funds. The nomenclature is backwards in modern parlance because, in our fiat monetary system, debt is money and serves as tradable securities.

So, the huge increase in T-bill issuance drove interest rates higher on those securities, without having as much of an impact on T-notes and T-bonds. This completely destroyed what was left of the yield curve, already damaged by Powell & Co.'s own manipulations.

Normally, a borrower pays a premium for keeping the lender's money for a longer period of time. All else being equal, term increases yield on debt and associated securities. Not so today, because Yellen is actively engaging in yield curve control, similar to what she did during her time as Federal Reserve Chair.

The rationale here is two-fold: shorter-term debt allows the treasury to take advantage of rate cuts (soon?) and—more importantly—many private market rates are based off of rates on Treasuries, especially the 10-year and 30-year.

Pushing trillions of dollars out of longer-term debt and into T-bills has created a very inverted yield curve (shorter term = higher yields) for Treasuries but also created considerable inefficiencies. Yellen's yield curve manipulations account for about 10% of the interest being paid on the debt - that's over $100 billion annually.

Despite the higher cost to taxpayers, officials will point to the artificially low rates on the 10- and 30-year as proof that everything is fine. The scary part is that the maturity schedule of Treasuries has to normalize eventually, and that's where things get really ugly.

"Hunter Heckel" Rapes Two Girls At Separate High Schools And Walks Free

Remember the name "Hunter Heckel." This freak is a dangerous pervert, and I'm betting others will suffer because of the stupidity of a Loudon County, Virginia, prosecutor, and other school and county officials. "Hunter Heckel" claims to be "gender fluid," translation: I'm too weak to act like a male, so I'm going to use the madness created by the left to put on a skirt and rape high school girls in the bathroom.

Trump Picks A Rust Belt

Running Mate

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

July 19, 2024

President Trump's selection of Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate is a clear indication that he's going all in on recreating his 2016 Rust Belt coalition. Comparing 2012 to 2016 election results, the movement of blue collar, working class voters was key to Trump's success in the 2016 election. These groups included union households, those making $50,000 or less, voters with an associated degree or had attended some college, and those that had a high school diploma or less.

Based on 2016 Edison Research exit polls, among union households that Romney lost by 18, Trump cut that margin in half and lost by only 9. Among those making under $50,000 a year, the margin went from -22 to -12. The margin for those who had an associates degree or attended some college went from -1 to +8. Finally, among those that had a high school diploma or less, the margin went from -6 to +5. The obvious item to note about these groups is that they are potentially new additions to the Republican Party.

Thomas D. Klingenstein: Charles Murray Aims to Disarm the Group Quota Regime

By Tom Klingenstein

Charles Murray's most recent book, Facing Reality: Two Truths about Race in America has dropped from sight. In Facing Reality, Murray discusses at great length group differences in violence (I leave this to the side) and intelligence. Murray believes that group differences in intelligence explain differences in group outcomes. I am neither knowledgeable enough nor inclined to comment. This topic is at the top of the modern-day list of taboos, and for good reason. It ought to remain at the top. (In fairness to Murray, he is a scientist, and as such has an obligation not to yield to taboos.)

But Murray did not write Facing Reality because he wants to talk about differences in group intelligence; indeed, he wrote it in spite of himself. He is on the shady side of life and would have preferred to sit under his own vines and fig tree. He knew perfectly well that even touching the subject would cause spears of hate and discontent to rain down upon him. But he believes his fellow citizens are exposed to an existential threat of which they are only dimly aware. And so, the patriot he is, he donned his rusty armor and returned to battle. The spears came.

I use Murray's controversial book as a jumping-off point because I believe Murray's warning is prescient and unique, and because he has a long record of being right on important social issues. There is an old advertisement for a long-ago swallowed-up Wall Street firm, E.F. Hutton: "When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen." I am not at all certain Hutton's clients ought to have listened, but I am quite certain people ought to listen to Charles Murray.

The threat of which Murray is warning? The charge by woke radicals that America is "systemically racist." Murray believes — rightly I think — that if we allow ourselves to be suckered by this charge, we shall be led down the road to group outcome quotas and from there to totalitarianism.

Virginia Education Opportunity Alliance: Youngkin Gets It Right on Cell Phone Policy

The Youngking administration recently released Executive Order 33, "issuing guidance on establishing cell phone-free education policies and procedures." Chris Braunlich, a senior fellow at the Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy, published a report explaining the new policy and its necessity.

I encourage you to take five minutes to read Chris's insight into this problem and how we can, as a society, move forward with solutions to help our kids navigate this new world of AI, TikTok, and X.

Don't Politicize Cell Phone-Free Education

Congressman Good Update: Republicans Stand with Israel

This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress. I was proud to attend and show my unequivocal support for our friend and ally in the Middle East, especially during their time of war against Hamas terrorists.

Image

Many notable Democrats decided to skip this event in protest, including Vice President Harris who was supposed to preside in her role as President of the Senate. Instead, she was conspicuously absent – missing the joint session to deliver a speech to a sorority conference. Enemies and allies alike watched someone who wants to be the next leader of the free world refuse to publicly support our important ally, Israel.

Outside of the Capitol, thousands of Hamas-sympathizers gathered to protest Netanyahu's address, burning our nation's flag and defacing our monuments and buildings with threats of "Hamas is coming." This was a display of domestic terrorism, and those guilty of criminal acts must be held accountable. Unfortunately, this appears increasingly unlikely with the Biden-Harris Administration's two-tiered "justice" system, and disparate treatment based on political affiliation.

My commitment to Israel is unwavering, especially during their war against Hamas, a terrorist group whose declared aim is the annihilation of Jews. As our ally faces these existential threats, it is crucial that we stand firmly with them, regardless of the pro-Hamas rhetoric on American soil. Israel's fight is our fight, and we must not turn our backs on them during this critical time.

Holding Secret Service Accountable

The assassination attempt on President Trump two weeks ago was 100% preventable. Earlier this week, Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee, and faced mounting bipartisan pressure and calls to resign due to her agency's failure to protect the former president.

In a welcome development, Cheatle officially resigned on Tuesday morning. While this is a positive step toward accountability, a complete investigation must be conducted to determine the reasons for the massive failure by the Secret Service and other responsible law enforcement and intelligence agencies. This must include Cheatle's former boss, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas.

The House did vote to create a special bipartisan task force to investigate the security failure of July 13. The House Freedom Caucus called upon Speaker Johnson to prevent Democrat Representative Bennie Thompson from serving. This demand stems from Representative Thompson's introduction of legislation to remove President Trump's Secret Service protection, a stance he has continued to uphold even following the assassination attempt two weeks ago. We have also advocated for his removal from his position as Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security.

Justice for Haskell Indian Nations University Students

The subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development had a joint hearing with the Natural Resources Committee to discuss misconduct at Haskell Indian Nations University. Documents show that students at this university reached out to university officials, the Bureau of Indian Education, and the U.S. Department of Interior to report accusations of sexual assault and they were repeatedly ignored. This is an injustice, and those responsible should be held accountable.
