Investigating President Trump's Assassination Attempt Last Saturday, the world watched in horror as a would-be assassin's bullet missed taking President Trump's life by just a fraction of an inch in Pennsylvania. We thank God for protecting President Trump when he moved his head at the very last moment. The tragic shooting was a reminder of the evil that is present in the world, and the frailty and preciousness of life. Sadly, a heroic dad lost his life when he dove onto his family to protect them as the shots rang out. We pray for the family of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, and also for a full recovery for the other victims who were wounded in this horrific act. The Secret Service owes the American public answers for what went wrong on Saturday. That includes answers to questions, such as, why wasn't the building part of the secure perimeter? Why wasn't' the roof of the building secured? When was the shooter first recognized as a threat? Why wasn't President Trump removed from the stage when the threat was identified? Why wasn't the shooter eliminated before he fired his weapon? We must have the answers to these questions and more, and those responsible for this massive security failure must be held accountable. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Monday morning. Speaker Johnson has also announced his intention to commission a special bipartisan task force to examine the security failure. We must also eliminate the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies that are destroying the effectiveness of our agencies and departments upon which we depend for the safety and security of our nation. |
Advocating for Our Veterans My office regularly hears from veterans who are unable to access health care services in a timely fashion. This week I authored a letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary McDonough to express several concerns about the VA's priorities under his leadership. Specifically, I asked for explanations about the following ways critical funds are being diverted from essential health care services: - "LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinators" at most VA facilities are now tasked with discussing "health care for transgender and gender diverse Veterans at VA, their personal commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ Veterans, and gender-affirming health care including hormones and prosthetics".
- The VA Long Beach in California offers a race-based stress/trauma group for Veterans "who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) who are interested in addressing issues of race-based stress, trauma, resilience, and empowerment.
- The VA Battle Creek in Michigan offers an 8-week BIPOC Support Group for veterans who identify as "people of color/BIPOC, or as multiracial or biracial."
- LGBTQ+ Brave Space Group which proclaims to be a "safe space for LGBTQ+ Veterans to chat among peers, share stories, and be validated in their service, no matter what era."
- The VA Minneapolis in Minnesota provides a peer support group for only Black Veterans, priding itself on "welcoming all Veterans who self-identify as Black, are enrolled with Minneapolis VA and looking for support from, or willing to provide support to, other Black Veterans."
The VA should be focused on providing actual high quality health care and keeping our nation's commitment to the brave men and women who served in uniform to protect the freedoms that all Americans enjoy today. You can read more about this issue here. |
