The White House press office released the following statement today:
On Tuesday morning, March 30th at Northern Virginia Community College, President Obama will sign the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, which delivered a significant down payment on the President's ambitious agenda to make higher education more affordable and help more Americans earn a college degree. In addition to lowering health care costs for American families and small businesses, this historic law raises the maximum Pell Grant, makes loan payments more affordable for students with unmanageable debt, and increases investments in community colleges, Historically Black Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and other Minority Serving Institutions, all at no additional cost to taxpayers. The education related initiatives funded by the law are fully paid for by ending the government subsidies currently given to banks and other financial institutions that make guaranteed federal student loans.
"By the way, the word democracy appears in none of our founding documents.
"The Founders of our nation recognized that we need government, but because the essence of government is force, and force is evil, government should be as small as possible. The Founders intended for us to have a limited republican form of government where human rights precede government and there is rule of law. Citizens, as well as government officials, are accountable to the same laws. Government intervenes in civil society only to protect its citizens against force and fraud, but does not intervene in the cases of peaceable, voluntary exchange."
Walter Williams
