Currently, however, there are complex and unnecessary laws on the books that make it difficult for lawful gun owners and dealers to comply with laws to prevent illegal gun trafficking. I have joined with over 200 other bipartisan lawmakers, and groups such as the National Rifle Association, in supporting a bill that would make it easier for lawful gun owners and dealers to comply with federal law and regulations, while ensuring that those who break the law are punished accordingly.
This legislation, H.R. 2296, would correct regulations that have resulted in law-abiding citizens being strongly penalized for insignificant technical violations—such as improper use of abbreviations, or filing records in the wrong order. It would also roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and ultimately focus our law enforcement operations on tracking the illegal use and trafficking of firearms."
